Pixel Promenade is a 2-4 player card game, where players compete to build the best pixel high street.
Pixel Promenade is a 2-4 player, light strategy card game, designed by Liam Nougher.
Picture yourself as an entrepreneur, determined to create the most successful shopping promenade. You’ll require a balance of Restaurants, Leisure Activities and Services to create a booming boulevard. This could be an easy endeavor, if it wasn’t for your competitors, who continuously add new buildings onto your street! How did this abandoned building get here? Who burned down my wedding boutique?!
In Pixel Promenade, players take turns drawing 2 cards from the deck. They place 1 card onto their own shopping street, and the other onto an opponents shopping street. Play proceeds until the deck is depleted, at which point players total up their points based on the icons on their street.
Buildings score points for the amount of stars they possess. A 2 golden star building will score 2 points, a 3 red star building, however, will deduct points.
Players also score bonuses for collecting business of the same type across their street, for example, 3 restaurants would score you 3 bonus points.
There are also bonuses for collecting unique symbols, though these symbols must be next to each other on the street (did I mention buildings cannot be moved once their placed, they can however be destroyed).
Some cards allow players to demolish a building to remove golden stars, but be careful as these demolition symbols count as a unique symbol, which contribute to bonuses if you’re not careful.
The player with the most points after totaling stars and bonuses wins, in the event of a tie all tied players win.
Originally, I designed Pixel Promenade for the CCCU 2019 Game Jam. The brief restricted us to design a card game with exactly 18 cards and no other components (other than a rule sheet).
Pixel Promenade was awarded Best Overall Game, demonstrating an excellent combination of artwork and mechanics. I managed to bag myself a copy of Sushi Go as a prize!
Due to it’s success at the game jam, I continued development on Pixel Promenade, increasing the amount of cards to 72. I then tested the waters, exhibiting Pixel Promenade at the UKGE in 2021, where it received a positive response.
Since then, I’ve continued to work on Pixel Promenade, though development has been slow due to finishing a Degree and Masters in Games Design. That is, until now, I’ve set myself a goal to deliver Pixel Promenade to Kickstarter by the end of 2023, so wish me luck and support me if you’re interested!
